This design build project consisted of the refurbishment and restoration of derelict Mill Buildings and the new build of adjacent building to incorporate a mixed development comprising of twenty apartments, three town houses and two retail units on a unique historic site located in the centre of Kilrush at a busy traffic junction. The work was carried out in a residential area. Environmental controls including noise and dust management were incorporated during the works. Traffic Management measures were incorporated during the installation of extensive new services involving deep excavations and resurfacing of town centre streets. The construction sequence included • The protection and stabilising of existing stone structures during the demolition of adjacent auxiliary building • Upgrading the structural integrity of the existing building by installing a new internal structural skeleton • Flaunching and stabilisation of chimneys • Upgrading the fabric integrity of the existing building by - Rebuilding original stone masonry - Re-pointing original stone walls The existing mill buildings received new structural skeleton, new concrete floors at all levels and were completely re-roofed. The external facades were cleaned and re-pointed using lime mortar with new windows incorporated into existing opes. All walls and ceilings were fully fitted with new mechanical and electrical services including a new lift. |
