INISHBOFIN COASTAL
PROTECTION WORKS &
PIER IMPROVEMENT
WORKS,

Inishbofin, Co. Galway.

This project consisted of the construction of a new 90m long
sheet pile pier, 300m long retaining sea wall in precast and
in-situ concrete, the dredging of approximately 30,000m3 of silt,
sand and gravel which was placed behind the concrete retaining
wall and the formation of a slope between the top of the wall
and the top of the existing cliffs. The work was topped off with a
precast revetment surface, and improvement works was carried
out to the existing quay, including provision of a new slipway.

Because of the location of the project on an offsore island,
significant logistical obstacles had to be overcome, including
extensive off site precasting, on site concrete production, and
restricted plant availability. The dredge element was heavily
restricted by environmental considerations, which imposed
severe limitations on the methodology to bring the dredged
material ashore.

To execute this piece of the work L&M Keating Ltd acquired a
unique piece of dredge plant from the USA, (a Versi Dredge
7012), and the dredge material was pumped ashore from the
floating plant.

Part of the dredged material had to be dumped at sea. This
dredging was carried out using a back-hoe on a jack up barge
and the material brought to sea via a split bottom barge.

The existing old pier was refurbished. Works involved the
installation of new pre-cast pier face elements. The existing pier
deck was refurbished and a new in-situ concrete deck was
constructed. Extensive repairs to traditional stone pier structure
which included replacement of stone elements and re-grouting of
joints.

The existing “new pier” was also refurbished. Works involved the
installation of a sheet-piled wall around the existing pier which
was tied into the existing structure. This was then infilled with
dredged material and a new concrete deck and steps
constructed. This element was constructed on a design build
basis. A passive cathodic protection system was installed.

L&M Keating Ltd executed all piling works by mobilising company
owned resources to the island by barge.
