| MILK MARKET REDEVELOPMENT, Cornmarket Row, Limerick. |
The development work at the Milk Market – one of the oldest markets in the country, having operated on this site since 1852 – involves upgrading the facilities to benefit traders, shoppers and the economy of the greater Limerick area, including many parts of Clare. Work at the Milk Market involves (a) the provision of a “umbrella-style” tensile roof structure supported on piled foundations covering an area of approximately 1,650 m2. This specially-designed shelter being erected over the Milk Market will eliminate weather-related fluctuations. (b) Removal of the existing block paved stall area and replacing it with polished concrete slab and granite paving. (c) The provision of a pavilion, which includes a mezzanine floor containing a restaurant and some additional permanent retail units. The initial ground works involved excavtion, piling, concrete foundations and services instalation all adjacent to the existing city wall. This involved closed liaison and coordination with the conservation architect, project archeologist and Limerick City Heritage Officer. |
