This project included both conservation and new build elements in the restoration of refurbishment of Stradbally Courthouse into a high quality Civic and Cultural Centre for County Laois. The restoration work involved the refurbishment and modification of the existing library space and offices within the original courthouse building into new library performance areas, museum area and recording studios The conservation work included but was not limited to • The cleaning, repair and re-pointing of external stone facings, paving, steps and railing plinths • The repair and renewal of external lime render to walls and chimney stacks; • Structural repairs to roof timbers and replacement of all slates and leadwork throughout this building • Structural strengthening and fireproofing of floors • Repair of stone staircases • Damp proofing treatment; and timber decay treatment. The new build element involved the construction of a new extension to the existing historic library building. This new extension provides residential accommodation, artists studios, exhibition and performance areas and a fully sound proofed recording studio. The works were carried out in a historically important environment within a town centre location involving ongoing interaction with the public and constant reviews of traffic and pedestrian management. The works were carried out under the new Government Conditions of Contract. The works involved close consultation with the client and the design team including a Conservation Architect. |
