| UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK LIVING BRIDGE |
This project involved an alliance with Eiffel Engineering of Paris, (construction of the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty) to build an iconic 350m long footbridge over the River Shannon at the University of Limerick. The area is a special area of conservation (SAC) which imposed major constraints on the methodology allowed. L & M Keating Ltd. as the Civil Works Contractor devised a 250m long temporary bridge supported on stone gabion piers, which rest on the river bed, thereby minimising environmental impact. This bridge was then used as access to the permanent pier location, for a 120t piling rig, and all other ancillary plant and equipment. The 6 No 50m long 80 tonne spans were fabricated on shore and transported and placed in position by L&M Keating Ltd. using 2 No 350 tonne mobile cranes in a tandem lift. Upon completion of the bridge erection the temporary works were removed returning the SAC river valley to an exact equivalent state to that of pre-construction. |
